Our clinic provides maxillofacial prosthodontic treatment for patients who have undergone surgery involving the mouth, jaws, or face.
Treatment is provided by a Board-Certified Prosthodontist (Japan Prosthodontic Society) and a Board-Certified Maxillofacial Prosthodontist (Japan Association for Maxillofacial Prosthetics) with more than 20 years of clinical experience in maxillofacial prosthodontics.

What Is Maxillofacial Prosthodontics?
Maxillofacial prosthodontics is a dental specialty that provides prosthetic rehabilitation for patients with defects of the oral and facial region resulting from cancer surgery, trauma, or congenital conditions.
Customized prostheses are fabricated to restore oral function and facial appearance according to each patient’s condition.
Common prosthetic devices include:

- Facial prostheses
- Specialized dentures after oral surgery

What Is an Obturator Prosthesis?
An obturator prosthesis is a removable dental prosthesis used to close an opening between the oral and nasal cavities. It is commonly provided for patients who have undergone surgery involving the upper jaw (maxilla), particularly after treatment for oral cancer.
When part of the palate or upper jaw is removed, patients may experience difficulties such as:
- Leakage of food or liquids into the nose
- Difficulty speaking clearly
- Difficulty chewing
- Reduced oral function in daily life
An obturator prosthesis is designed to close the defect and support oral function. The design is customized according to the size and location of the defect, the remaining teeth, and each patient’s individual needs.
Depending on the stage of treatment, an obturator may be provided immediately after surgery, during healing, or after the surgical site has stabilized.

Why Can Speech Become Difficult After Oral Cancer Surgery?
Some patients experience changes in speech after surgery involving the tongue, palate, upper jaw, lower jaw, or other structures of the oral and maxillofacial region.
Speech may be affected for several reasons, including changes in tongue movement, altered airflow through the mouth or nose, loss of supporting tissues, or changes in the shape of the oral cavity.
The type and severity of speech difficulty vary depending on the location and extent of surgery.
For some patients, prosthetic rehabilitation may help restore oral function by replacing missing structures or improving the separation between the oral and nasal cavities. In other cases, speech therapy or a combination of treatments may also be recommended.
If you notice persistent changes in speech after oral cancer surgery or other oral and maxillofacial procedures, consultation with a maxillofacial prosthodontist may help clarify the available treatment options.
Denture Treatment After Radiation Therapy
Patients who have received radiation therapy for head and neck cancer may experience changes in the oral tissues, including dry mouth, reduced healing capacity, and increased sensitivity.
Because these changes vary among individuals, denture treatment requires careful evaluation of the oral condition and previous cancer treatment.
In some cases, existing dentures can be adjusted. In others, new dentures or specialized maxillofacial prostheses may be considered, depending on the patient’s needs and clinical findings.
Our clinic evaluates each patient individually and develops a prosthodontic treatment plan based on the oral condition, medical history, and functional requirements. When appropriate, we work in collaboration with the patient’s medical team to provide prosthodontic care.
